Stands for Super VGA. When SVGA first came out it was used to describe graphics adapters capable of handling a resolution of 800×600 with support for 256 colours or 1024×768 with 16-colour support. It subsequently came to be used to indicate a capability of 800×600 or greater, regardless of the number of colours available.
