Java is a high-level, object-oriented programming language that was developed by Sun Microsystems (now owned by Oracle Corporation) in the mid-1990s. It is a popular programming language for building a wide range of applications, from desktop software to web applications, mobile apps, and server-side systems.

Java is known for its “Write Once, Run Anywhere” (WORA) capability, which means that Java code can be written once and run on multiple platforms without modification. This is achieved through the use of the Java Virtual Machine (JVM), which interprets Java bytecode into machine code that can be executed by the host operating system.
